E-Mission ‘Operation Montserrat’

E-Mission

E-Mission 'Operation Montserrat' is highly interactive, cross curricular videoconferencing activity delivered by the National Space Centre in Leicester. Tim Boundy from the National Space centre travelled down this term to two schools in the South East to deliver teacher training to interested schools. Over twenty teachers attended a full day of activities based on Operation Montserrat, with everyone taking part in a real mission in the afternoon.

We discovered that these sessions are very cross curricular covering aspects of maths, geography, science and citizenship. Students work in teams covering one aspect of the mission and it is imperative that everyone communicates well to get through the mission and save the inhabitants of the Island! The commander of the whole mission is based at the National Space Centre and the videoconferencing links them to the classroom. Information from the tasks is feedback to the commander via direct communication and inputting information into live spreadsheets.

Since the training days at the St Edmunds Catholic College and the Weald, attending teachers have booked their own ?Operation Montserrat?. Some students who took part at Cornwallis, appeared on ?You and Yours? programme on BBC Radio 4, discussing the merits of this type of Science teaching and how they enjoyed the experience.

To take part in an E-mission your school will need a videoconferencing system, ideally with a projected image and at least 5 networked PC/laptops in the same room.
