InfoMapper Phase II

Oct/

2004

Following a successful conclusion to a one-year pilot of GIS systems for education in 3 LEAs, the SEGfL has agreed to support the development of associated curriculum materials for use by the region's schools. In June 2004, West Sussex LEA was appointed the lead authority to manage a pilot initiative using the broadband package InfoMapper developed by WebBased of Plymouth.
InfoMapper had proven itself to be the most appropriate GIS broadband tool suitable for primary and secondary phase developments. The current work by West Sussex is bringing together interested curriculum advisors, museum curators, archivists and GIS experts from around the region to a series of hands on workshops. Work developing content currently underway (October 2004) is providing map layers and linked curriculum resources for primary and secondary use. Details of developments will be posted on the SEGfL website where appropriate. Link to SEGfL.
In September 2004 the SEGfL Steering Group announced funding to support the further development of InfoMapper use throughout the region. Server facilities with enhanced connectivity to the National Education Network and further detailed digitised mapping were purchased for use by all SEGfL schools. To compliment the new facilities funding was agreed to allow teachers in up to 5 schools from each of the 17 member LEAs to receive support to make best use of InfoMapper from WebBased and SEGfL curriculum staff. This is taking the form of workshops and seminar sessions in localities throughout the region from November 2004. Schools already possessing a license for InfoMapper and those purchasing the product using e-LCs will be elligible to participate. SEGfL is not able to fund supply cover.

Selection of schools and suitable venues will be organised in each LEA and co-ordinated by the SEGfL Project Officer.

InfoMapper comes with a powerful online web publishing facility which allows children and their teachers to organise and present information of any digital format. Interviews, photographs, video-clips, field studies, paintings all can be linked to a hot-spot on a map and once approved made available for anyone else in the region to share. The maps don't stop at the edge of the South East of course. InfoMapper is designed to share resources and is likely to become available throughout the UK . The large scale world maps and gazetteer allow pupils to zoom in on a growing bank of resouces around the globe.

Schools will normally be invited to take part in phase II by their LEA ICT support staff but may wish to contact the SEGfL Project Officer, Chris Davison, for further details. . Please add "InfoMapper Phase II" as the subject line.
