Kent Schools GIS InfoMapper Project

From January to July 2005 eleven Schools in Ashford, Kent used the GIS curriculum package InfoMapper to support local studies linked to History and Geography. Making use of maps and information stored online within InfoMapper, the Key Stage 2 and Year 7 children used the application to learn about the communities close to their schools and share the information they discovered with others.
Taking part in a wide range of activities in and outside the classroom, the children used ICT (camcorders, digital cameras and audio recording equipment) to record and creatively present their work. To read the project evaluation that reports on the five issues listed below please download the article.
- What impact does broadband technology make on Teaching and Learning?
- Does embedding ICT effectively across the curriculum provide more opportunities for children to improve their ICT skills?
- Does using GIS software improve children?s map reading skills and understanding about places?
- Does the effective use of ICT promote pupil creativity?
- Does the opportunity to publish work on the Internet improve learning outcomes as children are able to use ICT to effectively edit their own and others work?
