MLA South East - Every Child Matters ? to Museums

MLA Cracking Open Culture banner

MLA SOUTH EAST (formerly SEMLAC) is the voice for the museum, library and archive sector in the South East of England, covering the historic counties of Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, East and West Sussex, Surrey and Kent. We work in partnership with the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) and the eight other regional agencies to support communities and change lives through museums, libraries and archives.

MLA SOUTH EAST?s Access and Learning Team led the regional implementation of the national Strategic Commissioning Programme, funded by the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) and Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Its aims were to build the capacity of museums to work with schools, to meet the demand for museum learning in schools and to encourage museums and schools to work in partnership.

To evaluate the use of museums for school Improvement

This booklet can be used to contribute to your Self Evaluation Form (SEF). It provides structure and guidance to illustrate and evaluate the exciting work that takes place with museums to show how it contributes to the Every Child Matters (ECM) agenda.

To link museum learning to Every Child Matters Outcomes

Everyone who works with children and young people is looking for ways to improve the life chances and success of the young people in their care, both independently and in partnership with other organisations. This booklet is designed to help schools look at the links they have with museums and see how they help meet the needs of the ECM agenda.

To create a space for practical application

In the second section of this booklet, there are spaces for review, reflection and action. We hope that you find them useful ? either as a group activity in a staff meeting, or as curriculum leaders and class teachers plan their work for the future. We have also featured some examples from South East museums as part of the Strategic Commissioning Programme, to show you what it is possible. Further and fuller case studies and information can be found on MLA SOUTH EAST?s website at http://www.mlasoutheast.org.uk/. Throughout the booklet the term ?museum? is used. However this document can be used in reference to any cultural activity such as use of libraries, galleries, archives and sport.

MLA SOUTH EAST data has shown that 65% of schools in the South East are already using museums ? demonstrating museums? increasing significance to schools as a community learning resource.
