Read around the planet

How To Participate

This activity is open to students ages 6-18. To participate schools must be registered with the JANET Videoconferencing Service (JVCS) and have access to two-way interactive video equipment (ISDN H.320 or IP H.323). If you are unsure whether or not you have access to this type of equipment, check with your school's IT department. They may also be able to inform you if you are registered with JVCS. To check if you are registered with JVCS contact your RBC, regional IT support, or Tim Boundy at UKERNA (details below).

Your class will be matched with a class from a different location and each class will exchange reading activities. Classroom to classroom connections in English will take place March 1-2 and 3-5, 2007. Classroom to classroom connections in other languages will take place March 9, 2007. Activities in the UK will probably take place in the afternoons as time zone differences mean that in early March 2pm in the UK will be 9am on the US east coast.

Each connection is scheduled for an hour: 15 minutes for testing connections and introductions; 30 minutes for the reading activity (15 minutes per class); and 15 minutes for exchanging information about respective schools and communities. Activities can range from reading a favourite book passage, to dramatisations, to cartoon strips, to a "battle of the books" format - see the web pages for more details: http://www.twice.cc/read .

More information about TWICE, the Read Around the Planet event and past events is available on the TWICE web pages: http://www.twice.cc/read .

Thank you and have fun with your conferences.

*Disclaimer, Read Around the Planet does NOT guarantee schools an international connection. They will be matched randomly as usual in this project. However, the proportion of US schools to non-US schools does make a US partner very likely for any non-US school.
