Victorians Online

terrier steam engine at Tenterden
Key Stage 2 pupils were set a series of challenges as they learned about life in Victorian times and included creative writing, publishing live to an online newspaper as well as Science and Geography. All this work was tied together via a satellite broadband link, supplied by the Education Information Service of KCC, so that all the schools in the region, as well as those directly involved, shared in the project using high quality Videoconferencing and voice over IP telephony (VoIP).
The Project involved actors taking on the parts of Victorian characters associated with the railway and Tenterden station was transformed with victorian wares, luggage and passengers in period costume. The 'Victorians Online' website has captured some of the excitement and is a valuable store of visual Victorian resources and links to useful sources of further information. As the project comes to an end, a newspaper will be produced made up of children?s work completed during the project. (This will be distributed to schools throughout the SEGfL region during September 2006.) The newspaper is being sponsored by the Historical Model Railway Society (HMRS), as a part of their mission to achieve public education on matters concerning railways of the British Isles.
The Headteacher of Buxted C of E Primary School, Anne Radford, commented that it was the best project they had ever been involved with.
