The Birds are Back in Town

by Emma Goto on Wed, April 28, 2010

The blue tits are laying and eggs are soon to hatch. Sadly I am seconded away from class at the moment. I say sadly because traditionally this is a time of great excitement in my class. Children watch the birdbox footage through the SEGFL birdbox project site. They ask questions, discover facts and often create some of the best bits of writing I have ever seen them produce. Like most teachers I believe that if you can really capture children's imagination and interest the learning is transformed. The birdbox site certainly helped me to do that. Initially we used to watch the blue tits from other schools around the region but eventually we got our own birdbox streaming to the site. The children watched the footage in school and also outside with their families and friends. They often used the Squawk Back page to share what they had observed. The annual ask an expert day was very popular with the children and teachers alike. We used the site to launch a whole host of cross curricular learning over the years. I thought it might give you some ideas if I shared an article I wrote a few years back about the activities and learning sparked of by the birdbox footage in just a single day in my reception class.
